Manny Being... Traded

You know I wasn't really worried about the Los Angeles Dodgers being a threat in the NL West despite the fact that they are currently parked atop the division. The Dodgers just got a whole lot scarier. Manny Ramirez was traded to the Dodgers today just before the deadline.

Reports are sketchy but it looks as if this was a three team deal involving the Boston Red Sox, Pittsburgh Pirates and Dodgers. The Sox will get OF Jason Bay. L.A. now has a very jumbled outfield with decrepit guys like Juan Pierre and Andruw Jones taking up bench spots (and a significant chunk of the teams payroll. They also have up-and-coming guys like Andre Ethier and Matt Kemp who should be taking the call as starters.

This one could go either way for all teams involved. I think Manny will play hard with a change of scenery and will give them the power bat Andruw Jones couldn't. Boston will be set for the future with the OF trifecta of Bay, J.D. Drew, and Jacoby Ellsbury. Pittsburgh received prospects and will continue their perpetual rebuilding process and provide for a nice doormat to all other NL teams.

This trade also makes for a couple of VERY interesting potential World Series matchups. Joe Torre and Man-Ram's Dodgers against the Yankees? Man-Ram, Derek Lowe, and Nomar against the Red Sox? All the makings of an exciting postseason.

kemp and ethier don't move. OF in LA is kemp, ethier, manny i would guess. jones and pierre on the bench (spensive bench!) laroche and minor league pitcher were all i saw. past the deadline so it'll have to go to waivers for any other 'trading' to occur. ridiculous that LA pulled this off. let's not overlook the sox getting bay....he'll be good and signable. pittsburgh will still suck. so that much makes sense with this trade.

if LA can put jones to waivers and some sucker picks him up, they're off the hook for hsi contract. i hate the dodgers for the record and hope they get stuck with this contract. also not a fan of the red sox or the yankees. i am however a season ticket holder of the rockies and the reds are my team i pull for without condition. beigna season ticket holder for the rox makes it tough.

in regards to the rockies -- can we talk about them (i have holliday and tulo on my fantasy keep team) -- helton needs to retire. that back better not get better. surgery would be dumb at this stage in his career. he retires and the rox save 42 million over the next two years. throw that money at holliday in a contract for like 6 years, $120M (longer may be stupid and too expensive.) pay helton liek $5 per year to be the damn hitting coach or something. keep him witht he club as he'll have something to contribute but enough money to make him retire. hell, the packers (also a fan of them) are reprotedly paying favre $20M to sit at home. you know you've arrived when you're getting paid NOT to come to work. perhaps the bears could do that with their QB scenario? i digress.

lot here, and i hope griffey can contribute to the sox. would love to see him win and if it meant the white sox winnign the world series nda the cubs still waiting -- i'd be all for that. i love watching cubs fans suffer. it's even better when they get close and then lose.

great blog by the way.

was already rewriting it as you posted your comment. early details were that ethier and kemp were moving

and yes, I realize that I should have left the original intact but added an update. will do next time.

nice comment. i agree that the rockies need to stick with the core batters they have now. this is a group of guys that like eachother and play well together. it would be a shame to see any of them go. i would write about how well the rockies have been playing but i fear i will jinx them. someday.

yeah, i just saw that ethier was repalced with laroche. it's not liek the dodgers didn't have depth at 3B so laroche wasn't a big loss in that regard.

save that rockies post for a bit longer. even though the rockies didn't make any significant moves, i think they're in good shape for a run (regardless of what the dodgers just pulled off). if francis can return to marginally close to what he SHOULD be doing and not COULD, they have a legit 1-3 rotation. the back aend of that rotation is still very suspect.

and tulo. god bless tulo! that boy has picked a good time to pour it on.

quick question...you guys play in a keeper league or just a new draft from year to year?
